A LOT of dudes are struggling with this - fun - right now. I suppose it’s due to the chapter I and those in my circle are in - young and teen families. These thoughts were very topical and I’m grateful for the way you’ve expressed them.

I will challenge one point on the table that suggests Happiness can be internal or external. This conflicts with the ideas of Strategic Coach Dan Sullivan and Dr. Ben Hardy which teach the following:

“When you’re chasing happiness externally, it’s because you’re disconnected internally. Training yourself to be happy is completely internal. There is no external progress, no external validation. You’re competing against yourself—it is a single-player game.”

Enjoyed it Renzi! I appreciate your insights and thoughts. One of the thoughts that you brought to mind in talking about taking things too seriously is the impact it has on a team. When the leader takes things too seriously, so does the team. When the teams take things too seriously, the team members start to take themselves too seriously and this is a dangerous place to be.

When people take themselves too seriously, they are reluctant to ask for help, admit fault, own mistakes and they begin to pass blame. This can cost organizations dearly and not just money.

But there is hope. Taking yourself too seriously is a state of being and not an identity. Through intentional mindset reframing and retooling one can avoid this pitfall.

Thanks for the solid read.

I smiled the whole time I read your post. Trust me - - I know it's NEVER too late.... When people learn my age - there's usually a moment of complete silence before they speak. I've always seen the value in competitive sports as a great teacher and the Thunder organization is an excellent example. THANKS!!!!!

This was fun to read. Quick story on fun. Chelsi and I celebrated our 20th Wedding Anniversary in the Bahamas this last week. We had a blast. On the way home, sitting in the Orlando airport, we watched the OU vs Tennessee game and when Elle Parker hit the home run, we both jumped out of our seat as if to take a victory lap, giving high fives and pushing each other like frat boys with excitement. It was fun! We had many moments of fun this past week and were reminded of the importance of having fun as a couple. Enjoyed the read.

Fight. Finish. Faith.

Good column, Renzi. It caused me to think of what fun I have. You nailed a couple of things...hospitality, watching others enjoy themselves at a function you created....playing sports, like golf and interacting with the group after the game.

I quit drinking alcohol about 15-20 years ago after a heart scare (afib), and I haven't had an issue since. Nowadays, it is easy to get non-alcoholic beer and wine, and even hard liquor, so the social aspect of drinking is much easier. Also, I think about how much money I have saved on good wines! If you are interested, I can tell you which NA beers and wines are best. Occasionally, I will accidentally taste a real wine and it tastes like vinegar, so it keeps me with my regular drinks.

Fun is also watching the kids and grand kids achieve things, so much more fun than doing them myself, like Jack learning to be a pilot, and Eva completing her first year at the University of St. Andrews and meeting interesting people from all over the world. Just this year, she skied in Aspen, France, and Vermont, and traveled to Amsterdam, Florence, London, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. She just turned 19 this week.

We also enjoy watching tourists have fun here in Sandestin. They cause traffic and other problems, but they are all in a good mood and having fun at a special place.
