Perhaps the best example of meritocracy is athletics. Coaches, and you played for a great one, are going to play the best talent regardless of color, creed, religion or ethnicity. In hindsight, I guess I was part of the problem when I gave all my Little Leaguers participation trophies.

Along that line, a coach at a coaches all-star selection meeting said that "we're wasting our time. We ought to let the players pick the all-stars. They know the best players and are unbiased." Spot on!

At 90, after 21 years teaching in the Gaylord College at OU, I find immeasurable joy in reading, on social media, the accomplishments of my former students. They are mining the depths of the creative arts to come up with incredible magic in strategic communication. It is one of many blessings of having been an educator. And BTW: happy belated birthday.
